First-night survival kit: pack an “open-first” essentials box
The one box (or tote) that stops your first evening in the new place turning into chaos.
The first evening after a move has a very specific vibe: you’re running on adrenaline, the kettle is somewhere in “Kitchen — Misc”, and nobody can find the toilet paper.
A tiny bit of planning fixes that. Your essentials box (or sturdy tote) is a grab-and-go kit that lives with you — not packed deep in the moving truck — so you can make a cuppa, wash up, and get to bed without unpacking half the house.
The “open-first” rule
Pack it last, transport it with you (car/taxi/flight), and open it first.
What to put in your essentials box
Think: “one day of living normally” for everyone in the household — including kids and pets.
Bathroom essentials
- Toilet paper (2–3 rolls, not one)
- Hand soap + a hand towel
- Toothbrushes + toothpaste
- Shower bits: shampoo / shower gel / deodorant
- Daily meds + basic pain relief (Panadol/Ibuprofen)
- Rubbish bags (handy for rubbish and emergency “where do we put this?”)
Kitchen + first cuppa
- Kettle (or ensure you know exactly which box it’s in)
- Tea/coffee, sugar, and long-life milk (or a plan for a quick run to the dairy/supermarket)
- Water bottles or a refill bottle per person
- Snacks you can eat standing up (sandwich bits, chips, fruit, muesli bars)
- 2 mugs + a couple of plates/bowls (disposable is fine for night one)
- Cutlery set + a small sharp knife
- Dishwashing liquid + sponge/cloth + a tea towel
Bedroom basics
- Sheets + pillowcases for the first beds you’ll use
- Pillows
- Duvet or warm blanket
- One change of clothes (plus socks/pyjamas)
Setup + quick fixes
- Phone chargers + a multibox / extension lead
- Scissors or a box cutter
- Mini toolkit: screwdriver, Allen keys, small adjustable spanner
- Packing tape + a bit of masking tape (great for temporary labels)
- Marker pen
- Torch (and spare batteries) — useful if you arrive after dark
Keep on you (not in the box)
- Photo ID, passports, and important paperwork
- Keys (old + new), wallet/cards, and any small valuables
- Tenancy agreement / settlement paperwork (if you need it)
- Medication you can’t risk losing in transit
A quick NZ-specific tip
If your keys are coming from a property manager or settlement lawyer, put their contact details in your phone favourites and keep a charger handy. Settlement timings can occasionally be delayed, and key collection is a lot easier when you’re not on 4% battery.
