The Ultimate Moving Checklist (NZ)
A Kiwi-focused moving timeline from 8 weeks out to move-in day — built around surveys, parking permits, key release, and the little things people forget.
Two NZ realities to plan for
- Access + parking can change the whole price/time (especially in hilly areas like Wellington or busy Auckland streets).
- Key release (rentals or property settlements) can create waiting time. On settlement day, lawyers often don't release keys until the afternoon once funds transfer — plan a buffer.
8 weeks before
- Shortlist 3–5 moving companies and request quotes — ask for a home or video survey.
- Check likely move dates and time constraints (handover/collection windows, building access hours).
- Start a “moving folder”: tenancy docs, settlement statements, ID, insurance details, and receipts.
- Begin a ruthless declutter: sell on TradeMe, donate, recycle — less volume usually means less cost.
- If you’re buying, map the settlement risk (dates may shift). If renting, confirm notice periods and end-of-tenancy cleaning timing.
6 weeks before
- Confirm what’s included in your quote: dismantling/reassembly, packing materials, waiting time, stairs, long carries.
- Measure anything that can ruin a move day: sofa depth, fridge/freezer clearance, stair turns, lift/elevator size, door widths.
- Book specialist services early if needed (piano, artworks, storage, international shipping).
- Start using boxes for non-essentials (books, spare linens, seasonal items).
4 weeks before
- Book your moving company and get the date + start time confirmed in writing.
- Sort parking: do you need to reserve street parking or coordinate with neighbors at either property?
- Arrange any building requirements: lift booking, building manager notice, move-in/out slots, loading bay access.
- Update addresses where it matters: GP/dentist (if changing), bank, subscriptions, key services.
- Plan utilities handover and broadband/fibre timing (internet delays are common — consider a mobile hotspot backup).
2 weeks before
- Pack room by room and label boxes with room + priority (e.g., “Kitchen — Open First”).
- Create a “do not pack” corner: documents, keys, chargers, valuables, medications.
- Confirm insurance/cover details and how to report damage (time limits, photos, forms).
- If you have kids/pets, plan move-day care — moving day is safer and calmer with one less variable.
1 week before
- Pack your Essentials Box (first 24 hours). Include toilet paper, soap, chargers, kettle/tea, meds, bedding.
- Confirm parking + access again (lift booked, truck size allowed on driveway).
- Take quick photos of high-value items and existing damage (helps if you need to make a claim).
- Freeze a few meals or plan easy food (moving day ends with “what do we eat?”).
Move day
- Keep documents/keys/valuables with you — not on the moving truck.
- Do a quick walkthrough with the team: fragile items, priority boxes, and what must not be stacked.
- Check the property before leaving: cupboards, ceiling cavity/attic, shed/garage, meter readings, mail.
- On arrival: direct box placement by room (this saves hours), then open the essentials box first.
Move-in day + next 48 hours
- Make beds first. A good sleep fixes a lot.
- Confirm utilities are live, take meter readings, and test key fixtures.
- Flatten boxes as you go and keep one “returns” box for packaging/paperwork.
- Update any remaining address changes and set up NZ Post mail redirection if needed.
