Moving made simple: a UK guide to a calmer move
A practical UK-focused plan for removals day: reduce stress, avoid last-minute surprises, and settle in faster.
The one thing that makes moves feel “easy”
Most stress isn’t the lifting — it’s the unknowns: “What time do we get keys?”, “Where will the van park?”, “Why is the quote suddenly higher?” A calmer move comes from one habit: lock decisions early and write everything down.
The ZenMove method
- Fix the basics (date, access, what you’re taking)
- Remove surprises (confirm fees, insurance, arrival windows in writing)
- Control day one (essentials bag + a simple unpack order)
8 weeks before
- Choose a target moving week if your completion date may shift (common with chains).
- Get 2–4 removals quotes and compare like-for-like: hourly vs fixed price, packing, dismantling, and mileage.
- Declutter with intent: “sell / donate / recycle / tip”. Less volume = less cost.
- Start a move file: quotes, inventories, parking notes, lift booking rules, and key contacts.
4 weeks before
- Book the removals team (or van hire) and get a written confirmation of what’s included.
- Check access: stairs, tight turns, parking restrictions, permit needs, and loading times.
- Order supplies: strong boxes, tape, labels, mattress bags, packing paper, sofa covers.
- Plan time off: moving day + a buffer day if you can manage it.
2 weeks before
- Pack by zones (not by “rooms”): books/media, spare linens, seasonal items, décor.
- Label smart: room + priority + contents (“Kitchen — OPEN FIRST — kettle/mugs”).
- Confirm building logistics: lift reservations, concierge move slots, rubbish rules, storage access.
- Utilities and services: broadband, gas/electric, water, council tax, TV licence, bins.
1 week before
- Prepare an “open-first” kit: toilet roll, hand soap, chargers, meds, snacks, bin bags, wipes, basic tools.
- Separate valuables: passports/ID, documents, keys, jewellery — keep on you, not on the van.
- Confirm the removals plan: arrival window, crew size, vehicle size, payment method, and any special items.
- Photograph fragile/high-value items so condition is documented before loading.
Move day
- Keep essentials with you (car/backpack) — don’t let it disappear into “misc boxes”.
- Do a final sweep: loft, cupboards, garden shed, meter cupboards, under beds.
- Direct unloading with one simple rule: boxes go to the labelled room, “OPEN FIRST” stays visible.
- Record meter readings at both properties (a quick photo is perfect).
First 48 hours after
- Unpack in this order: bathroom → beds → kettle/mugs → kitchen basics → clothes.
- Flatten boxes as you go to keep space calm (and stop the “box pile” taking over).
- Update addresses: bank, DVLA, GP/dentist, employer, subscriptions, and key deliveries.
